Since Café Matou's inception in late 1997, Chef Charlie Socher's menu has embodied a respect for traditional French cuisine—updating classics with simple twists to reflect current tastes and trends. An eating establishment like Café Matou had been the dream of its chef/proprietor Socher since he trained in Paris. He “….wanted to open a restaurant where one is totally comfortable—from the way the room feels to the food on the plate. In our kitchen, we concentrate on flavors and how different ingredients complement each other in a dish.” The result is Café Matou with its warm setting, attentive service, and both food and wine offerings typically available only at higher prices. And, the reviewers agree. Phil Vettel of the Chicago Tribune wrote that “Chef/owner Charlie Socher's Café Matou is a satisfying sanctuary devoted to distinctively prepared French fare.” And, French-based Gault-Millau includes Café Matou among Chicago's top restaurants describing its appeal as “tout le monde-enjoyable for everyone.”
